Scottish photographer, geographer and traveler John Thomson is considered one of the first photographers to take pictures of the East Asian countries. At the end of his long journey, John returned to London.

After his return to Britain in 1872, the year, the photographer left the country only once, in 1878, the year he visited Cyprus. But we want to tell you another story. When John returned to Albion, came to him the idea to publish a magazine, which is called “Street Life in London.” The publication was a monthly, where the Scot published his photographs of the capital’s streets. Emphasis was placed on life in the slums, so his project can truly be regarded as perhaps the first photographic project in the world on social issues in a documentary style.
